Important Traffic Update: I-70 Access Impact

We want to make you aware of a significant traffic impact that may affect travel to and from several Columbia Public Schools.

Beginning April 10, 2026, the St. Charles Road bridge over I-70 (Exit 131 – Lake of the Woods) will be closed for demolition and reconstruction as part of the MoDOT Improve I-70 project. This closure is expected to remain in effect through the construction period, with additional lane reductions and impacts on nearby roads continuing into the fall.

This bridge serves as a primary access point for multiple schools in the northeast Columbia area. As a result, increased traffic congestion, delays, and detours are expected, particularly during morning arrivals and afternoon dismissals.

What This Means for You

• Expect longer travel times, especially during peak school hours
• Some routes will be reduced to one lane or temporarily closed
• Increased traffic volume on alternate roads such as Route Z, Paris Road, and Rangeline
• Please plan to leave earlier than usual to ensure an on-time arrival
• Bus routes may experience minor delays during the initial adjustment period

Recommended Alternate Routes

To help minimize delays, please consider the following options:

From I-70 (Eastbound or Westbound):

• Use Exit 133 (Route Z) instead of Exit 131
• Follow Route Z to access nearby schools

From Highway 63 (Southbound):

• Exit at Route B (Paris Road)
• Turn left onto Mexico Gravel Road
• Continue east to Lake of the Woods Road and proceed to your destination

From Highway 63 (Northbound):

• Exit at Discovery Parkway
• Continue to Rolling Hills Road
• Turn right onto Richland Road, then left onto Rangeline
• Use Route Z to access schools in the area
